The kit that matters for a working UK driver is not the kit the shops sell. What your licensing authority allows, what recording passengers makes you responsible for, and the four bits of hardware that earn their place on shift.

Fit a camera for your own work purposes and you will almost certainly owe the ICO data protection fee too, £52 a year for a sole trader, or £47 by direct debit.

Search for taxi tech and you get a shopping list: a cabin camera, a phone mount, a charger, a diagnostic dongle. None of it tells you what decides whether the camera in your basket can legally be switched on. The moment you carry a paying passenger, an in-cab camera stops being a consumer purchase and turns into a licensing question and a data protection question, and the answer changes depending on which authority plated your car. Everything below about our own reviewed products comes from those reviews; every rule, fee and rate is quoted from the ICO, the DfT, TfL, Ofgem or a named council policy.
Check What Your Licensing Authority Allows Before You Buy a Camera
There is no national rule for cameras in licensed vehicles. The DfT's statutory standards leave it to each authority, warning that an "Imposition of a blanket requirement to attach CCTV as a condition to a licence is likely to give rise to concerns about the proportionality of such an approach", and noting that only a small minority of authorities have so far mandated CCTV in all vehicles. Most drivers are choosing, not complying.
London. TfL: "Only CCTV systems meeting these requirements and approved by TfL can be installed into licensed taxi and private hire vehicles." The approved list dated 27 May 2025 runs to 17 fleet, telematics, security and taxi-specific suppliers; Nextbase, Garmin, VIOFO, Thinkware, 70mai, BlackVue and Vantrue appear zero times. A driver on r/TransportForLondon, stopped and made to remove his: "I was forced to remove my dash cam. Being told i can only use the cams which are sold by TFL. Mind you it's Ridiculously expensive around £400+".
Leeds. Private hire condition 11 requires a camera from the council's approved list, signage, and the recorder and card stored securely away from public access. Then the line that ends it: "The images contained in the recording device may only be downloaded by an Authorised Officer of the Council or Police Officer." Reviewing your own footage, the premise of every consumer camera, is not allowed.
Glasgow. Fitting is voluntary, the paperwork is not: only the licence holder can file the notification form, it goes in with an administration fee, and the council aims to acknowledge it within 28 days. Installation must be by a qualified auto-electrician, with no suction cups, no viewing screens, and passengers told out loud that the camera is running. If you rent a plated car, the controller "will be the holder of the taxi or private hire car licence and not the driver".
Rotherham mandates. Its 2023 policy requires audio and video recording in every licensed vehicle, to Appendix T: twenty-one days of stored images minimum at "HD1 (720/288) size or better", no images displayed inside, two panic buttons with one reachable from any passenger seat, and an indicator showing when audio is recording. No consumer dash cam ships with a passenger panic button. Even under a mandate the system "does not need to be operational during other times (i.e. when being used for domestic purposes)".
Wales draws the distinction the marketing blurs, defining dash cams as "external facing cameras that record footage external to the vehicle" and barring them from recording audio or internal images. Anything pointed at the back seat must meet the council's CCTV requirements, with the full specification and an installation certificate behind it.
The ICO fee is separate. The household exemption reaches only personal or household use with no commercial or professional connection: "If you have a dashcam that you use for work purposes on a vehicle that you use for work - even if you own the vehicle - then you will need to pay a data protection fee." Tier 1, where a sole trader sits, is £52, less £5 for direct debit, so £47; the maximum penalty for not paying is a £4,350 fine.
One live page to ignore. The South Lakeland taxi CCTV policy, last updated 3 April 2024 and still online for an area now covered by Westmorland and Furness, tells drivers that "Data Controllers are also entitled to charge a fee for a subject access request (currently a maximum of £10) as published in the ICO CCTV Code of Practice". That cap was a Data Protection Act 1998 concept and has not applied since 25 May 2018. The ICO now says "In most cases, you can't charge a fee for responding to a subject access request."
Renewing a licence also needs an HMRC tax check, which you must do yourself, not through a tax agent. It produces a 9-character code, valid 120 days, without which the authority cannot process your application.
What a Four Channel Camera Actually Gets You, and What It Does Not
The IIWEY N5 we reviewed is not the single cabin lens most drivers picture. One main unit with a 3-inch screen carries three lenses, front at 170 degrees plus two side cameras at 150 degrees each; a fourth runs on a cable to the back window, also 170. Our review: "you do not get one clean shot down the cabin. You get two wide-angle views from up by the mirror, one sweeping down each side of the car", covering the front seats, the door line, part of the rear bench and each side window.
Eight infrared lamps handle the dark, four to each side camera, and infrared is black and white: "You will get a face. You will not get the colour of the jacket." Nobody posts a still frame, so that is a reviewer's judgement, not a measurement. Either all four channels record at 1080p or the front goes 2.5K with 1080p elsewhere, so the cabin-facing cameras stay at 1080p, and GPS is not mentioned anywhere. A plate at a junction is fine; three cars back in the rain is not.
One owner, fitted professionally, found his rear-view mirror blocking the right-hand side camera completely, taking half the cabin coverage with it. Another found the cable "a very tight fit on length" in a 2026 Kia Sportage, so measure the run to your 12V socket.
Parking coverage grows the budget. The N5 runs on a supercapacitor, so nothing records with the ignition off unless you hardwire it, and both parking modes (1fps time-lapse, and a collision mode that saves and locks a 10-second clip) need a hardwire kit under a separate ASIN. CBW could not get his fitted: four places refused, saying these cameras have a tendency to break or short out. Another itemised £20 for the kit and £120 for professional fitting. Wired to a constant live rather than the ignition feed it drains the battery: an owner left a Halfords-fitted camera for two weeks and the AA found "the dashcam had drained the battery into deep sulphation". A low voltage cut-off is no guarantee against that either.
The card decides whether evidence survives the shift: 128GB bundled, up to 256GB supported, loop recording over the earliest footage once full, and one owner reports it full within hours on four channels. Elsem, the only reviewer in the sample of 100 who drives a taxi for a living, gave exactly one problem: "The only issue is the limited SD card capacity." An impact locks a clip; an argument in the back seat does not trip the G-sensor, so it sits in the loop until overwritten. App and WiFi failures run through the recent 100 at every star rating, and our review calls the app "a single point of failure, and it is the flakiest part of the package".
Our verdict is "buy it, with conditions", with the sentence that travels with it: "What stops this being a clean recommendation is reliability." The aggregate is 4.3 stars across 4,220 ratings; the 100 most-recent average 4.05, seventy five-stars and eighteen one-stars. Most of those eighteen describe a unit that died, stopped recording or began malfunctioning, several just past Amazon's thirty-day return window. The one that should worry a working driver is the quiet failure, as sam found after a non-fault accident: "Sometimes it records, sometimes (for DAYS) it doesn't. No rhyme or reason." IIWEY promises twelve months of after-sales service and our summary of whether you get it is "a lottery".
Our review's five conditions:
- Budget for the hardwire kit and fitting, and ring round fitters first.
- Check from the driver's seat that your mirror will not block a side camera.
- Buy up to the 256GB supported; 128GB will not last a long shift across four channels.
- Pull any clip you care about the same night.
- Check weekly that it is still recording.
Audio, Signage and the Paperwork a Camera Drags In
Cabin audio is not illegal in a UK taxi, but the default position is off. The ICO: "Generally, you should switch off any capability to record audio by default. You should only use it in exceptional circumstances, for example by a trigger switch, due to its intrusive nature." The DfT's statutory standards say audio should be "overt" and "targeted" and "must not be continuously active by default". TfL goes further: "if the system comes equipped with sound recording facility then this functionality should be disabled", with audio only via a panic button that automatically resets.
The off switch for private use is a requirement, not a loophole: "Continuous recording, whilst the vehicle is being used for private purposes outside of working hours, is likely to be considered excessive. Drivers should have the option to deactivate the recording in these circumstances." The DfT agrees it should be manually switchable off, audio and video, when not being used for hire. Anything saying it must be hard-wired to the ignition with no off switch has it backwards.
The ICO expects customers in or near the vehicle to be told you are recording, by a sign, and told if audio is on. The sign carries the controller's contact details and points to the privacy notice, which can live on your website if the sign says where. In London TfL issues the interior sign carrying the data controller details, with a supplier-issued exterior sign.
There is no single national retention period. The ICO's steer for ordinary incident-free footage is that holding several weeks of it just in case is probably too long, and that "If there hasn't been an accident, and you have no other reason to keep the footage, you should probably delete it after a week or so." Licensing conditions carry their own numbers: TfL caps retention at "a maximum period of 28 days from the date of capture", South Lakeland at 31 days, Rotherham requires capacity for 21 days minimum. Follow your condition if you have one, the ICO's steer if not.
A passenger can ask for a copy of footage of themselves, and UK legal threads show them doing it. You have one month to respond, extendable by two if the request is genuinely complex, and "In most cases, you cannot charge a fee to comply with a SAR." If other people appear you will probably need to redact or blur them, or with their agreement arrange a viewing instead of handing over a copy. The ICO also expects a Data Protection Impact Assessment "that fully addresses our use of surveillance in vehicles" before you start.
One date stamp: every ICO page quoted here carries a banner saying the guidance is under review following the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, which received Royal Assent on 19 June 2025. It is a live position, not a settled one.
Keeping the Phone Alive and Cool Through a Full Shift
The phone is the business: dispatch, navigation, often the card payment. It fails two ways, flat or hot, and no battery fixes hot.
The first answer is not a power bank, it is a decent 12V socket charger: drivers put the floor at 2.4A, because most USB ports built for data put out less than 1.0A. That is why a phone running navigation drains while plugged in. Two more things drivers keep landing on: "If your phone power keeps going down even plugged in it's probably the cord you're using", and "An inverter doesn't gain you anything." We have not reviewed a 12V car charger, so that is the shape of the fix, not a recommendation from us.
Heat is the failure that costs you trips. Drivers report that "charging while using the phone easily increases heat by about 50% alone", and one had to take a Galaxy S21 out of its case with cold air on it before GPS worked, because when it overheated the driver app stopped recognising movement and fed him trips from where he was five minutes earlier. The fixes are physical: case off, phone in front of a vent, cable rather than wireless when the car is warm. Those threads are a UK and US mix: the kit advice transfers, the passenger consent advice does not.
A power bank is the redundancy layer, not the supply. For that slot, the INIU 45W 10,000mAh power bank we reviewed is genuinely pocketable: 10.9cm by 6.8cm by 1.7cm, a 12cm braided cable clipped on as a strap, three ports (two USB-C, one USB-A). INIU's copy promises nearly two phone charges; our review says budget for one full charge plus a useful splash, citing an owner who got an iPhone from 5% to 84% on a full pack. Read the 45W rating as a best case, and only through the USB-C port with the supplied cable, which is USB-C to USB-C, so anything on Lightning needs your own lead. It refills in about two hours, so charge it the night before.
A dead backup is worse than no backup. Of the 100 most-recent reviews, 11 are one star, and 8 of those are about the unit stopping dead at about ten uses, seven weeks, three months and eight months. Within those 11, exactly two describe a thermal or electrical incident: one failure "also fried the port it was plugged into", and another overheated the phone and started flashing before it quit. Our own balance: "Eight bad units in a hundred recent reviews is not a recall. But on a product whose entire job is to work at the single moment you need it, it is not background noise either." INIU covers it for three years and our review is clear that the warranty "is the only reason it does not sink the score", so keep the order in your Amazon history and cycle the pack once before you rely on it. Our review tests it as a travel battery for a phone and flags an unresolved question about low-draw kit, so do not build a dash cam parking-mode setup on it.
Reading Your Own Fault Codes Before You Book the Garage
A warning light you cannot interpret means paying a garage to interpret it. A cheap Bluetooth dongle in the OBD port is the standard answer, and UK drivers are blunt about the cost: "£10 for a BT blue reader. believe me.. it is enough". Another runs the Car Scanner ELM OBD2 app on a £20 "Streetwize OBDII" from Euro Car Parts. Paying more is only justified by brand-specific software: FORScan for Ford, VCDS for VAG cars, Carista for service resets. The objection that you still need a mechanic gets its answer in the same thread: "not all codes are obscure and some can be fixed by diy, not paying out for a mechanic."
It reads and clears the check engine light, shows freeze-frame data from when a fault triggered, and streams live RPM, coolant temperature, calculated load and fuel trim. It will not touch airbag, ABS, SRS, oil service or TPMS lights. The adapter is a dumb radio; the app does the diagnosing.
We reviewed one, the RICOKEY Bluetooth code reader, and scored it 3.0 out of 5. We are not dressing that up as a recommendation. Our review calls it "not the OBD2 reader we would buy today" and "not a broken product, but a coin toss dressed up as a universal one, and not something we would spend our own money on as a first choice". Of the 100 most recent reviews, 54 are five stars and 29 one star with barely anything between, 34 sit at one or two stars, and the recent average of 3.51 is a fair drop from the 4.0 badge across 6,201 ratings.
What goes wrong is knowable before you spend. Eleven of the 100 could not connect at all, seven of them on iPhone or iOS: the listing title advertises iOS while the packaging in the product photos says "NOT Support for iOS (iPhone or iPad)", although two reviewers did get iOS working, one on iOS 26. It is a classic Bluetooth adapter, paired in your phone's settings rather than inside the app, which is precisely the failure mode. Eight reported it would not work with their vehicle, clustering on newer or less common models (a 2020 VW Tiguan, a Peugeot 3008) and on motorbikes, while a 2013 Mini, a 2018 Hyundai i30N and a Ford Focus read fine. The seller's own photo warns that "cheap clone versions of this adapter" may not work with the J1850-PWM protocol used by some Fords. Four buyers hit a paywall, the listing's app section headed "Various Free and Paid Apps."
So check your phone, your car and the app before buying any adapter. On an iPhone, spend a little more on a BLE adapter that pairs inside the app; our review names the Veepeak OBDCheck BLE+ and the vgate iCar Pro as names to search, not recommendations we have tested. If one looks dead on arrival, try it with the engine running.
The narrow case where it makes sense has four conditions, all of which matter: "If you run an Android phone and a mainstream car built roughly between the mid-2000s and the mid-2010s, and you are happy to try a couple of apps with the engine running, this is a lot of capability for very little". One five-star owner had a fault read and cleared in about three minutes, skipping the diagnostic charge. Our review's framing: "Clearing a code to see whether a fault is a one-off or something to investigate is the core job."
Charging at Home if You Drive a PHEV or an EV
Drivers who have done it agree on the first decision: "If you don't have a charger at home, don't go electric", because "In most instances price per kWh charging at public chargers will be 5-10x that of a home". Those are drivers' figures, not ours. The checkable number is Ofgem's: for the cap period 1 July to 30 September 2026, a standard variable tariff on direct debit is capped at 26.11p per kWh including VAT at 5%, averaged across England, Scotland and Wales, with a 57.19p daily standing charge. Name the cap period whenever you use that rate: Ofgem sets the next by 26 August 2026.
For a plug-in hybrid the maths often points away from a wallbox. One UK owner: "With a plug in Hybrid, because of the fairly small batteries you should be fine to plug into a 13A socket as there's enough time overnight", and there is "little benefit in charging a PHEV at a public charge point", where the per-kWh price will likely cost more per mile than petrol.
This matters more in the trade, because the licence often picks the car. Since 1 January 2023, TfL requires that "All PHVs licensed for the first time must be zero emission capable (ZEC) and meet the Euro 6 emissions standard". ZEC is met by a vehicle that will "Emit no more than 50g/km CO2 and be capable of being operated with no (zero) exhaust emissions for a minimum range of 10 miles", or "Emit no more than 75g/km CO2 exhaust emissions and be capable of being operated with no (zero) emissions for a minimum range of 20 miles". A 10 or 20 mile electric range is a small battery, so for a large share of newly licensed London drivers a 3kW lead is the right tool, not a compromise.
That is where our EzGoGo review lands: "Get it if you drive a PHEV or a modest battery EV, you have a socket you can dedicate to it, and you are treating it as an overnight top up rather than a fast charge." It is a 3kW device, UK 3-pin at the wall and Type 2 at the car, with steps at 6A, 8A, 10A and 13A, a delay timer and a display for voltage, current, energy and charge time. EzGoGo's own positioning: "13A for occasional fast charging, 10A/8A for regular charging, and 6A for special situations". Occasional is the manufacturer's word, not ours. Of the eleven recent owners who named their setting, seven use 10A or lower and three 13A; all eleven gave five stars.
It does not fit the full-time private hire case: our review says be more careful if it is your only way of charging a big battery daily. A Polestar 2 owner says it "charges at 2.9kWh so my Polestar 2 takes 10 hours for 29kWh of charge", while another settles it: "If you were full electric this would take too long to charge but as a hybrid charger it is spot on." The 10 metre headline is 8.82m of cable, with the control box 0.7m from the wall socket.
Of the 100 most-recent reviews, 82 are five stars and 10 are one star, split evenly. Five report damage at the socket, one of them headed HAZARDOUS PRODUCT and reporting "overheating, melting/charring plugs and blowing fuses" within a year, which they say they reported to the Office for Product Safety and Standards. The other five are the unit itself failing. Seven reviews across the one to three star bands give a lifespan of about six weeks to roughly a year. Our review declines to adjudicate the causes and so do we. What you can price in is the guarantee: two years promised, five of the hundred could not act on it, one owner at nine months told "they only have a 30 day window in which you can return it".
The 3-pin rules are the same whatever lead you use. EzGoGo advises a new wall socket "to prevent loose connections and heat buildup". Do not run it through an extension lead: the Energy Saving Trust says "Extension cables should not be used for charging electric vehicles", and a five-star owner in our sample warns against it in capitals after his extension got hot. BS 7671 also expects a socket used as an EV charging point to be a BS 1363-2 type marked "EV" on its rear and labelled as suitable for EV charging, which an ordinary socket on a shared ring is not. That wording is from BS 7671:2018+A1:2020; Amendment 4 was published on 15 April 2026 and we have not read its Section 722 text. If in doubt, ask an electrician. And do not trail the lead across a pavement: DfT guidance warns that cables across the footway are a trip hazard and "may amount to a breach of Part IX of the Highways Act 1980".
The grant picture is where most pages are still wrong. From 1 April 2026 the maximum for residents and landlords rose from £350 to £500 per socket, with five chargepoint schemes running to 31 March 2027; the Energy Saving Trust's page, updated three weeks after the change, still showed £350 when we checked on 21 August 2026. An owner-occupier with a driveway gets nothing: the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme closed to new applicants on 1 April 2022, and its replacement requires you to rent, own a flat you live in, or have no off-street parking at all for the cross-pavement grant. The Workplace Charging Scheme wants a Companies House reference, a VAT number or a non-domestic rates bill, which most sole traders do not have. And OZEV will not fund a granny charger either way, because Mode 1 and Mode 2 charging are excluded along with "slow AC (less than 3.5kW)".
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to register with the ICO if I have a dash cam in my taxi?
Almost certainly yes if you fit it yourself for work purposes. The ICO's position for this trade is that "Generally speaking if you are a self-employed taxi driver and have CCTV or a dashcam in your taxi, you are required to pay a fee", unless you have a contractual arrangement with your council setting different obligations. A sole trader is tier 1 at £52, less an automatic £5 for direct debit, and the maximum penalty for not paying is a £4,350 fine.
Check the exception first: where an authority mandates the system the DfT says it will in most circumstances be the data controller itself, and in Glasgow the controller is "the holder of the taxi or private hire car licence and not the driver", which matters if you rent a plated vehicle. The ICO has a free self-assessment checker.
Can I record sound inside the cab?
Yes, but not continuously and not by default. The ICO says you "should switch off any capability to record audio by default" and use it "only in exceptional circumstances, for example by a trigger switch", and the DfT's statutory standards say audio must be overt, targeted and switch-triggered rather than continuously active. TfL says that where a system has sound recording, "this functionality should be disabled".
Some go the other way: Rotherham mandates audio-capable systems, with an indicator visible to all passengers showing when audio is recording and a panic button reachable from any seat. If audio can be triggered, your signage has to say so.
Will my card reader or tracker stop working when 2G is switched off?
Not soon, but check the SIM generation before you buy anything connected. Ofcom's position as of August 2026 is that "3G mobile networks are now switched off", so kit on a 3G-only SIM is already dead, while all operators "will switch off 2G by 2033 at the latest": EE from May 2029, O2 from summer 2029, and Vodafone during 2030.
Ofcom names payment terminals alongside care alarms and security alarms as kit that might need upgrading. The urgency attached to card machines is overstated, but a 2G-only terminal today is a known end date.
Do I need new software for Making Tax Digital, and when?
It depends on your qualifying income, and for higher earners it has started. Above £50,000 for the 2024 to 2025 tax year you "should've started using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax from 6 April 2026"; above £30,000 for 2025 to 2026 means April 2027; above £20,000 for 2026 to 2027 means April 2028.
The trap is what qualifying income means: turnover before expenses, measured on gross fares, so a full-time driver can be over £50,000 while netting far less. HMRC does not supply the software, so the purchase is third-party MTD-compatible bookkeeping software plus a habit of capturing receipts and mileage as you go.
