How long to run a dehumidifier a day UK: it depends on the job. A load of washing takes two to four hours behind a shut door. Holding a flat under the mould line runs most of the day. Drying after a leak runs for days. Aim at 55 per cent and let the humidistat decide the hours.

Read the room, not the clock

Search this and nearly every answer is a number of hours. Six to eight, usually. But a dehumidifier removes whatever the room will give up, not a fixed amount per hour, and that changes with temperature, with how wet the room is, and whether the door is shut.

The ninety second check

Four checks tell you how much work the room needs. None costs anything.

  • Run a finger down the inside of the coldest window at seven in the morning. Dry glass, mist and water pooling on the sill are three different amounts of work.
  • Pull the wardrobe off the external wall behind it. Black speckling in that corner means the surface has been wet for weeks.
  • Feel the washing on the airer. A load that used to dry overnight and is now damp the next evening says the air is saturated.
  • Open the back bedroom after a day shut. A musty smell is mould working somewhere you have not looked.

One of those means run it. Two or more and this is a winter-long job, not an evening one.

The number to run to

CIBSE, the UK building services institution, points at 40 to 60 per cent relative humidity in homes, and 55 is the target we would set through a British winter. Mould germinates readily once humidity at a surface passes roughly 70 per cent, and the surface behind a wardrobe on a cold external wall is always wetter than the meter in the middle of the room. Dust mites also need sustained high humidity, which argues for a bedroom nearer 50 than 60. Those are typical guidance figures, not readings from your house.

A hygrometer in the warm living room reads fine while the corner that smells runs ten points higher, so you chase a number that was never the problem. Three jobs, three different run times

The question has three answers because people arrive with three different problems. Work out which is yours first: what suits one is wrong for the other two.

Drying washing indoors

Short and intense. One load on an airer, the smallest room you can shut, machine beside the airer, laundry mode if it has one, and it is typically done in two to four hours. Laundry mode ignores the humidity target and runs flat out by design, so switch it off when the washing is dry.

Holding a home under the mould line

Low and long, and here the question stops making sense as asked. Set the humidistat to 55 per cent and the machine picks its own hours: it runs until the room reaches the number, stops, and restarts when the reading drifts up. It can be switched on for twenty hours and compressing for four. The first two days are the exception: a room damp since October holds water in plaster, carpet and curtains as well as in the air, so it runs almost without stopping until that clears.

Drying out after a leak

Continuous, for days, and no humidistat in this version. A floor or wall that took water from a burst pipe needs the machine running without stopping, windows shut, until the material is dry rather than until the air reads 55 per cent: days for a carpet, weeks for plaster. Stop the water first, and beyond a small spill speak to your insurer, because policies commonly cover professional drying.

Compressor or desiccant changes the hours

This split decides more daily run time than any dial on the machine.

A compressor chills a coil and condenses water onto it, so it needs air warm enough to give up moisture at that surface. As the room cools, extraction falls away, and in a properly cold room the coil ices over and the unit spends its time defrosting. A desiccant passes air across a moisture-absorbing wheel and warms it to drive the water off, so cold does not trouble it. It returns a little heat and draws more power per hour.

Meaco, a UK manufacturer, publishes the bands plainly: below 10C a desiccant, 10C to 15C a desiccant or large compressor, above 15C either. Read those as run-time bands, not just buying advice. In a living room at 20C a compressor on a humidistat is done in a few hours; in an unheated garage at 6C the same machine can run all day and collect almost nothing. The litre figure on the box misleads for the same reason, since extraction is quoted at test conditions, usually close to 30C and 80 per cent.

Where a room really is at 18C to 21C, we would leave a compressor on a humidistat and stop counting hours. In a home sitting at 12C to 15C all winter, and plenty do, the fix is the other technology, not a longer day.

What each month asks of the machine

The damp season runs roughly October to March, but where you live moves it by weeks and so does the year. A coastal Cornish flat stays mild and stays wet; a Scottish stone cottage reaches cold surfaces early and holds them late; a new build with heat recovery ventilation should be handling this itself. September

Nothing, in most homes, and that is the right answer rather than a cautious one. Nights are still warm enough to keep glass above the point where water forms. Use the month for the free work: get a meter in, check the extractor fans pull, move furniture off external walls. A reading over 60 per cent in a warm week means the season has started early, which happens in ground-floor flats and over cellars.

October

The crossover. First misted panes, usually in a bedroom, because bedrooms run cool and two sleeping adults put out a lot of vapour overnight. A couple of hours in the evening in that one room, door shut, is the whole job.

November

The peak, and not by accident: cold enough that every external surface is a candidate, dark enough that the washing has moved indoors. Set 55 per cent, shut the door, and expect it plugged in most of the day while the house clears its backlog.

December and January

The coldest surfaces of the year against the wettest indoor air, and the months where the technology decides the outcome rather than the hours. An unheated bedroom, garage or conservatory can sit below 10C, where a compressor disappoints at any run length.

February and March

The tail, where people carry on longer than they need to. The signal that ends the season is the one that started it, read backwards: a fortnight of dry glass with the meter under 55 per cent unaided. Early March on the south coast, late April in a Pennine cottage.

April to August

Off. Running one through a normal British summer is electricity spent on work the outdoor air does for free. Switch it back on for a wet spell with washing to dry indoors, fresh plaster, or the aftermath of a leak.

Setting the daily run window

In order, and the order matters: the first three decide whether the rest do anything.

  1. Put a meter in the room with the problem, not the hall, and read it at seven in the morning before anyone opens a window. A Tapo T315 room thermometer and hygrometer logs both to a phone so you see the overnight shape, though it needs a hub.
  2. Shut the door and the windows. A machine drawing on outdoor air never reaches its target and never stops. Never block a permanent air vent or air brick: where a room has a gas fire, back boiler or stove, that vent is its air supply.
  3. Set the humidistat to 55 per cent and no lower. A target the room cannot reach is the commonest reason one runs around the clock for no extra protection. Continuous mode belongs to laundry and post-leak drying.
  4. Give it three days before judging it. The first day or two of near-continuous running is the machine clearing a backlog. Still above 65 per cent on day three with the door shut and something structural is wrong: too cold, too small, or water still arriving.
  5. Measure what a day actually draws. A plug with energy monitoring reports the kWh the machine used, which you multiply by your own unit rate.   6. Empty the tank before bed, and clean the filter monthly. A clogged filter starves the airflow, so the machine collects less per hour and runs longer.
  7. Read the manual before leaving it unattended. Electrical Safety First advises against running one overnight or while you are out unless the manufacturer says it is safe unattended. Use a wall socket, not a coiled extension reel.

Where the hours get wasted

  • The door was open. Ventilation and dehumidification both work, just not in the same room at once. An open window, or an open door onto the rest of the house, means the machine is drying the outdoors. Shut the room and give it two hours.
  • The target is set too low. A humidistat at 40 per cent in a cold British bedroom may be a number the room never reaches, so it never cycles off and runs all day for no more protection than 55 gives. Put it back up and the run time falls by itself.
  • It is pointed at a building fault. A dehumidifier dries air. It does nothing about water coming through a wall or drawing up from the ground: run it against penetrating or rising damp and it pulls more moisture out of the wall while the defect carries on. Condensation forms on cold surfaces on cold mornings and fades in summer; a patch still damp in July, or worse after heavy rain, is the building, and that is the one thing here to call somebody about. Use a surveyor who is not selling the treatment.
  • The coil has frozen. A compressor running for hours in a cold room with a nearly dry tank and ice on the coil is defrosting itself more than dehumidifying. Warm the room or move to a desiccant.
  • The tank filled overnight. Streaming windows and a full tank at six is not a broken machine, it is one that stopped at two. Empty it last thing, or run a hose downhill to a drain.
  • It is in the biggest room, not the worst one. Machines end up in the living room because that is where people sit. Put it where the signal is.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to run a dehumidifier all day or in short bursts?

On a humidistat, all day is not all day: the machine reaches its target, stops, and restarts when the reading drifts up. Short bursts suit a room that only gets wet at a known time, and a cold bedroom badly, because every burst starts from wet air.

How many hours a day should it run to dry washing indoors?

Two to four hours is typical for one load in a small room with the door shut and the airer beside the machine. The same washing in an open-plan kitchen can take most of an evening, because room volume matters more than load size.

Does running it twenty-four hours a day damage the machine?

Domestic dehumidifiers are built for long duty cycles, and the humidistat spaces out the compressor starts, so continuous running is not what wears one out. Starved airflow is: a blocked filter, an obstructed outlet, a machine jammed against a wall.

My machine runs all day and the humidity never drops. What is wrong?

Four causes cover almost all of it: the room is not sealed, so it is drying the outdoors; it is too cold for a compressor to condense anything; the machine is undersized; or water is still arriving from a leak, a wall, or a tumble dryer venting indoors.
