Quick answer

No single figure fits: runtime is bulb count set against battery capacity. Take the maker's quoted "up to" hours, which assume continuous running on fresh alkalines, and divide by the hours you light the tree each evening. That is your nights per set of cells. Switching the box's 6-hour timer on is what stretches it.

What the set in your hands is telling you

Ask how long battery Christmas tree lights last and every page answers with a number of hours. The number is usually real; it just describes a different set to yours. Twenty micro LEDs on two AAs and two hundred bulbs on three C cells have nothing in common but the packet. Six things settle yours.

Turn the battery box over

Count the cells. Two AA, three AA, four AA and three C are the usual arrangements: cell count sets the voltage the string runs at, cell size sets how long it runs. An alkaline AA typically holds somewhere around 2,000 to 2,900 mAh and a C cell several times that, which is why the big outdoor sets use them.

Count the bulbs

Sets come in steps: 20, 50, 100, 200. Current draw tracks bulb count closely, so doubling the bulbs on the same box roughly halves the hours. Some makers drive a longer string slightly dimmer to claw runtime back, so it is not exact, but it is close enough to plan around.

LED or old filament

Grains of rice on thin copper wire, or small moulded lamps on green flex, are LEDs, and they are still cool to hold after an hour lit. Filament bulbs are bigger glass and go warm within minutes. LEDs draw a small fraction of what filament drew, which is the only reason battery sets work at all, so an inherited filament set is not one to run on cells.

Plain switch, timer or remote

Three kinds of box: a slide switch with on and off, one with a third position marked timer, and one with an RF remote. On most sets sold in the last few years the timer means 6 hours on and 18 off, repeating from the moment you flick it. That is the biggest lever you have and the position most people never use. A remote suits a tree you cannot reach behind, though the receiver stays awake listening, so off on the handset is only standby.

Colour, or the mode it is running in

Colour matters less than people expect, and any difference between an amber set and a cool white one is dwarfed by the gap between six hours a night and twelve. Mode matters more: fade and twinkle light only part of the string at any instant, steady on lights all of it. Run a tree steady anyway, because chasing patterns look like a shop window, and keep the fade for the last evenings of a tired set.

Indoor set or outdoor rated

An outdoor set carries an IP rating, commonly IP44, and a battery compartment with a gasket and a lid that clips rather than slides. An indoor box has no seal. Cold is the underestimated part: alkaline capacity falls as the temperature drops, so a set that ran a fortnight indoors will not manage that on a doorstep in January. Lithium AA cells hold up far better below freezing, and a porch or a wreath is the one place they are the right cell.

Turning what you counted into a number of nights

Makers quote runtime as "up to" a figure. Read it as continuous running, on fresh alkalines, at room temperature: a ceiling, not an average. The sum from there is short, because quoted hours divided by the hours you actually light the tree each evening gives nights per set of cells.

A set quoted at up to 24 hours, lit from four o'clock until you go up at eleven, runs seven hours a night and is flat on the third evening. The same seven hours against a set quoted at up to 120 hours gives about seventeen nights, and putting that one on its 6-hour timer instead gives twenty, with nobody able to leave it burning overnight by accident.

Then scale it. Late November to Twelfth Night is around forty nights, so forty at six hours is 240 hours of running: two changes of cells across the whole of Christmas for the 120-hour set, ten for the 24-hour one. At ten, the set is the wrong tool for the tree.

Cheaper sets often quote nothing at all. If yours does not, treat the first set of cells as the measurement and note the day you fit them against the day the string goes dim.

The season, switch-on to Twelfth Night

Late November, the outdoor sets go on first

Advent Sunday falls on 29 November in 2026, the weekend a great many trees go up. Wreaths, porch garlands and window strings tend to go out a week earlier, around the Black Friday weekend on 27 November, so the front door has already spent a fortnight on its first cells before the tree is lit. Fit the outdoor sets with new cells rather than the half-used ones from the drawer: they are the ones you least want to be up a ladder for in December. December, the long steady run

Dusk falls before four in the afternoon by mid-December, so a tree switched on when it gets dark and left until bedtime runs longer than most people assume. Flick the box to timer at the hour you want the lights to appear, because the cycle repeats from that moment rather than from any clock inside the box. Anything quoted under about a hundred hours wants its first change here.

Christmas week, the longest hours of the year

From Christmas Day, Friday 25 December in 2026, through to New Year, the tree tends to be lit through the day as well because the house is full. Double your usual hours a night for that week when you do the sum, and put a spare set of cells in the drawer before the 24th.

6 January, Twelfth Night

Decorations come down on Twelfth Night, Wednesday 6 January in 2027. The job that matters is not the packing, it is opening every battery box and taking the cells out before anything goes back in the loft. More sets die in storage than are ever worn out on a tree.

Getting the most nights out of one set of cells

  1. Use the timer position, not on. Flick it at the hour you want the lights to appear each evening. On a tree that would otherwise run from dusk to bedtime it costs nothing and buys nights.
  2. Match the cell to where the set lives. Indoors, alkaline or NiMH both work. Outside in a hard frost, lithium AA. Rechargeables in a set with a low-voltage cutoff are the combination to test before you commit.
  3. Fill the box in one go, from one packet. Never mix part-used cells with new ones, or one chemistry with another. In a series box the weakest cell sets the pace and can be driven flat and then into reverse, which is how a box starts leaking mid-season.
  4. Outdoors, get the box off the ground and under cover. A soffit, a porch roof or a lidded container, lid seam facing down so water runs off rather than in. Cold ground steals capacity and standing water finds every seam.
  5. Turn it off at the box. If the set has a remote, the handset only drops it into standby, and the physical switch is the one that stops the drain.
  6. Know when to stop feeding it AAs. A tree lit every evening for six weeks, standing within a couple of metres of a socket, wants to be mains. A plug-in string on a mini smart plug that fits a double socket holds the same schedule with no cells at all.

Where sets die, and what still saves them

Cells left in from January to November

The classic, and the one that ends most sets. Alkaline cells left in a stored box vent over the year and the white crust across the springs is caustic. Recovery is worth a try: gloves on, cells out, neutralise the deposit with a cotton bud dipped in white vinegar, dry the compartment, then scrape the springs back to bare metal. A spring corroded right through rather than merely furred up means the box is finished, and the string with it.

The set has gone dim rather than dark

LEDs fade as the box voltage falls instead of switching off cleanly, so a string on tired cells makes the tree look flat rather than broken. Change cells then, not when the last bulb goes. If fresh ones do not restore it, look at what you put in: NiMH at 1.2 volts against alkaline at 1.5 is a fifth less across the string, which reads as dimmer light on a resistor-limited set and can trip a low-voltage cutoff early while the charger insists the cells are full. That string wants alkalines.

Half the string is out

On most battery micro LED strings the wire fails long before a bulb does. Look where the string was bent hard around a branch, crushed under a storage lid, or tugged where it enters the box, and wiggle it there with the set switched on. If it flickers back you have found the break, and on a fixed-bulb set the repair means soldering very fine enamelled wire, so this is usually the end.

The box has taken damp outdoors

The symptoms are intermittent rather than dead: a set that works when tapped, or lights and dies within a minute. Pull the cells, open the lid fully and leave the box somewhere warm and dry for a day or two, not on a radiator. Then clean the contacts, refit and re-site it, because a box that took water there will take water there again.

Frequently asked questions

Do rechargeable batteries work in battery Christmas lights?

Yes, in most sets. NiMH cells sit at 1.2 volts against an alkaline's 1.5, and on some strings that reads as dimmer light or an early cutoff while the charger still says the cells are full. Try one set in the string you care about before switching the whole house over.

Should I take the batteries out when the lights come down?

Yes, out of every box, every year. Alkaline cells left in a stored set leak over the eleven months in the loft, and the crust that grows across the springs eats the contacts. Tape them to the outside of the box and they are still there in November.

Are battery lights or mains lights better on a tree?

Battery sets win wherever a cable would show: a bay window, a wreath, a garland up a bannister. Mains wins on everything else, and a modern LED string draws so little that running cost is not what decides it. Within reach of a socket and lit every evening for six weeks, mains on a timed plug is better.

Do outdoor battery lights last as long as indoor ones?
